Manchester United midfielder Fred has admitted there is no margin for error in their pursuit of Europa League glory.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side face Copenhagen in Cologne on Monday for a place in the semi-finals, where they could meet Premier League rivals Wolves for a place in the final.

Fred reckons United are ready to go all the way and win a first trophy under Solskjaer, but conceded they cannot afford any slip-ups in the tournament's new one-off game knockout format.

“There are two important games and a single match in the final,” said Fred. “You have to make sure you’re highly prepared, you can’t make mistakes.

“In league football you still have the chance to recover – if you make a mistake and lose the game you can still recover later in the competition.

“In tournaments, if you lose a game by a certain margin of goals, it’s difficult to come back.

“So you need to concentrate even more. I think that's what’s most important for us. That will be the biggest test.

“I like playing all types of football, whether it’s a tournament or a points-based championship like the Premier League, but I think in tournaments you need to concentrate more.”

United, who fly to Cologne tomorrow, are favourites to win the Europa League, with Fred convinced the hectic domestic schedule they have tackled since football resumed has been the perfect build-up.

“We’ve got used to these games coming one after another during the intense fixture calendar in June and July,” Fred told United Review.

“So we’re kind of used to it and I think it could be an advantage when playing games that are a few days apart, like they will be in Germany.

“I think it will be an advantage for us in the Europa League tournament format – I’m certain we’ll be ready.”

United midfielder Jesse Lingard is targeting a second Europa League triumph in four years, after lifting the trophy under Jose Mourinho in 2017.

“We can’t wait to get there and play this game now,” said Lingard. “One hundred per cent, I want to win it again.

“Lifting a trophy is a special feeling you can’t really explain and winning it before you take that confidence forward.

“We've got a mixture of youth and experience in the squad and for the young lads to win their first trophy, it will be perfect for them.

“With the squad we've got and the personnel we have, I feel like everyone is going to play a part.

“Throughout the build-up in this competition everyone has played their part.”
