First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon has publicly condemned eight Aberdeen Football Club players after their match against St Johnstone was called off.

Sturgeon says the players "blatantly broke the rules" as they visited a bar in the city where two contracted Covid-19.

Sam Cosgrove, Scott McKenna Craig Bryson and Dylan McGeouch were all caught on camera sitting at a table at Soul Bar in the city last Saturday evening.

Sturgeon has slammed their behaviour as "completely unacceptable" just moments after it was confirmed their Scottish Premiership clash due to take place on Saturday had been postponed.

The city of Aberdeen is on the verge of fresh lockdown measures after a fresh spike in cases with the televised clash at McDiarmid Park now not taking place.

Speaking at her daily briefing, Sturgeon said: “We are expecting members of the public to behave in a highly precautionary manner right now and when a football club ends up with players infected with Covid, and let’s remember this is not through bad luck but through clear breaches of the rules, we cannot take even the small risk that they spread the infection to other parts of the country.

“The Scottish government will also be contacting all club captains and managers to emphasise the importance of complying with the guidance.

Speaking at the Scottish government daily briefing, Sturgeon added: “Football has been given the go ahead on the strict condition that clubs and players abide by the guidance that has been agreed.

"If they don’t do that they put at risk the return of the professional game. To say this incident is deeply regrettable is an understatement…”

The SFA and SPFL confirmed that the game was called off due to a request from the Scottish governement.

A statement read: "Following a meeting this morning between the Minister for Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing, Joe FitzPatrick, the Scottish FA Chief Executive, Ian Maxwell, and the Chief Executive of the SPFL, Neil Doncaster, to further examine the circumstances around the self-isolation of eight Aberdeen FC players, a request was received from Scottish Government - and agreement reached - to postpone Saturday’s Scottish Premiership match against St Johnstone.

"There is an evolving public health outbreak in Aberdeen and the minister conveyed the need for additional work to provide further assurance around Aberdeen FC’s adherence to the agreed protocols.

"Given the overriding responsibility to public health, the subsequent advice and discussion with the minister this morning means that the Joint Response Group must adhere to the request to postpone the match."

Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack issued a video address to supporters ahead of the decision and urged compassion with the players involved.

He said: "We're not out of the woods by any means and we now have to contend with missing eight first-team players for three games.

"The club, literally, got the JRG assessment and decision on the affected players via e-mail 30 minutes before it went public just a few hours ago.

"We don't have all the facts, none of us do.

"What I do know is that you and I, the board, all our dedicated staff at the club and the Trust, Derek and the players, has worked tirelessly as one to reduce our income gap from £10million to just under £4m.

"And, at the same time, led the charge in our city region to help those struggling.

"I don't know about you, but I'm far from perfect and prone to making errors of judgement."
